1st LD Writethru: Tokyo stocks down despite U.S. stimulus package TOKYO, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) — Tokyo stocks fell Wednesday despite the U.S. government’s latest aid package to stimulate the economy, as investors are discouraged by latest readings of the U.S. economy and a stronger yen relative to dollar.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 110.71 points, or 1. 33 percent, from Tuesday to 8,213.22.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 14.36 points, or 1.73 percent, to 817.22.
Decliners were led by securities, auto and precision machinery issues. Major gainers included insurance, pulp and paper, and warehouse issues.
Top Japanese automaker Toyota Motor fell 145 yen, or nearly 5 percent, to 2,985 yen, due to the dollar’s weakness and the harsh situation facing the big three automakers in Detroit.
Sanyo Electric and Panasonic also suffered losses after media reports said Goldman Sachs Group Inc. told Sanyo Electric Co. that it will not hold further negotiations with Panasonic Corp. over the possible sale of shares it holds in Sanyo as Panasonic’s offer price is likely too low for Goldman. Sanyo Electric slipped 6 yen, or nearly 4 percent, to 150 yen, and Panasonic dropped 50 yen, or nearly 4 percent, to 1,347 yen.
On the First Section, declining issues outnumbered advancing ones 1,198 to 407, with 102 others remaining unchanged.
Trading volume on the main section came to 1,667.44 million shares, down from Tuesday’s 2,152.98 million

IT’S every theatre group’s worst nightmare.
And it was almost curtains at Meltham Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s (GSS) annual performance when their lead, Paul Richmond, dropped out with swine flu – just one hour before the curtain rose.
But luckily musical veteran Richard Buxton, of Huddersfield GSS, agreed to fill in – at just 45 minutes’ notice.
Brave tenor Richard agreed to take over the role of Colonel Fairfax in The Yeomen Of The Guard at St Bartholomew’s Church, Meltham, at the last minute.
Mr Buxton, of Paddock, dropped his fish and chips to race to the church and don the colonel’s uniform with only a few minutes to spare.
Thankfully Richard, a musical director of Halifax GSS, knew all the songs having performed many of them at concerts.
And while he occasionally dipped into the libretto (the book with the script, songs and stage directions) on the Friday night performance, Mr Buxton was able to perform unaided on Saturday afternoon and evening.
Meltham GSS producer Helen Bamforth said: “Paul was a bit croaky but he managed on the Thursday night.
“At 6.45pm on Friday we were desperate and we finally got in contact with Richard.
“Richard is well up on musicals and he’s a concert singer and he’d sung the songs before in concert, but not on stage.
“He came within half an hour. The costume fitted him, thankfully.
“He didn’t need the music book. He just needed the libretto and he hardly used it.
“We asked him to perform the matinee and he didn’t even need the book. He was brilliant.
“He had a very good stage presence and he sung the songs beautifully.
“Before we were panicking – in a mature sort of way! I rang Richard’s wife and he was having fish and chips.
